JEY MCMURRAY,  CO-FOUNDER

Jey is a seasoned construction and real estate development professional with over 19 years of industry experience. His passion for people and business are driving values for 421 Builders, believing that the “story” of a project is just as important as the outcome. 

A licensed General Contractor since 2006, Jey’s expertise is with custom home construction and remodeling, commercial projects and creative re-purposing of materials. Jey enjoys public speaking, strategic planning and business development. 

Teammates describe him as innovative, driven, down-to-earth, strategic thinker who can be relied on to offer creative solutions. 

Jey graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Finance and Banking.

TROY SHAFFOE, CO-FOUNDER

Troy has enjoyed a 20+ year career as a professional sales representative with top performance in the wide format and printing industry in both North and South Carolina territories while also pursuing his personal hobby of land acquisition, home design, construction, renovation, rental and home sales. 

He started working with Jey in 2011 on projects in Blowing Rock, then received his General Contractor's license in 2013 in order to better understand the field. He is an innovative and strategic professional with a vision for turning old into new and a passion for building.

Troy graduated from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio with a degree in Business Administration. 

AMY TYSON, DESIGNER

 Amy's love of architecture and construction started at a very young age, building forts in the woods and creating spaces in the attic and basement for her and her brother to Appalachian State University where she received an undergraduate degree in Industrial Technology and Construction Management.

Following graduation, she moved back to Durham, NC to help run a high-end residential construction firm. It was during this time that she received her NC Residential Contractor's License.

She received her Doctorate of Architecture in 2009 from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, after 5 years of intensive study. During this time she also received certification as a LEED Accredited Professional.

She is currently a resident of Asheville, NC, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, creating designs for the Southeast Region while still running her office in Honolulu.

SUSAN O'BRIEN, DESIGNER 

Susan's responsibilities include interior design, paint and material selections as well as input on lighting and hardware.

Susan holds degrees in Interior Design and Business Administration. She was an Account Manager in the commercial furniture industry for many years in Atlanta with clients ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies. 

After her career in corporate sales she was a Buyer, Trainer and National Sales Manager for a multi-location office furniture retailer. She currently works part-time for a high-end kitchen and home décor store in Winston Salem. In addition to retail sales, she supervises quality control of inventory and creates the store displays.

Susan lives in Clemmons with her husband and son who is a college student.
